‘Hamaravanan Gahanbar’
The Gahanbar that does not have sponsor
Aftab Yazdani: We all know that the Meydiaremgah Gahanbar ended 2 days ago, on Verahram Izad Day.
And, of course, we all know the story of gahanbar, and whatever I say will not be new for you. We have grown up with these customs. But, when the Hamaravanan (all souls) gahanbar was held in many places of Yazd (where Zoroastrians live), I thought of writing about it, even if you know the full story.
This story is different from other gahanbars. Every gahanbar ceremony has a sponsor and one donor, in whose name the gahanbar is prayed. The family of that donor holds the gahanbar ceremony and most of the work is on its shoulder, though others help in the work in order to benefit from its blessings. The prayers are prayed in the house or the land of the one who has initiated this gahanbar from the beginning.
From long past the houses and lands in which gahanbar was prayed have been inherited and changed hands and no one has sold them because gahanbar has to be prayed in it. These types of houses and lands are plenty in Yazd.
But the story of Hamaravanan gahanbar is different. It is prayed in a place which does not belong to any person, but to all, and all see that place like their own house.
From long past, such places have been called ‘Gahanbar Khaneh (Gahanbar House). The gahanbar which is prayed in Gahanbar Khaneh does not have a sponsor and is not prayed in the name of anyone, but in the name of “all souls”.
